KAY IVEY SIGNS ‘NO NEW TAXES’ PLEDGE
IN DECATUR
“I will tell thepoliticians who come begging for new taxes,
‘Not One Penny More’!”
(DECATUR, AL – February 12, 2010) You rarely see $151 worth of pennies piled up in one place. But StateTreasurer and Republican gubernatorial candidate Kay Ivey used the small cointo make a big point in Decatur today.
“There’s an old saying that goes ‘If you watch thepennies, the dollars will take care of themselves,’” Ivey said. “For decades, politicians in Montgomery ignored that saying. The pennies grew into dollars, and the dollars became millions of dollars. Because we ignored the “pennies”—the small items hidden in every nook and cranny of state spending— we nowface a very big problem. When the last of the Federal Stimulus money runs outlater this year, the General Fund will be left with a projected revenueshortfall of more than half a billion dollars.”
Ivey explained that February 12th, 2010was the 151st anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. SinceLincoln appears on the penny, she assembled $151 worth of pennies to make apoint: even the smallest tax increase would hurt everyday Alabamians.
“If your taxes were raised just $3 a week, this isalmost exactly the amount that would be taken out of your paycheck in a year. How many tanks of gas can you buy for your car or truck with $151? Howmany meals can you feed your family with for $151? With this recessiondragging on and on, can you afford to give $151 more to thegovernment? Of course not!
“The answer isn’t to keep shoveling money toMontgomery,” Ivey said. “The answer is to find and eliminate the wastefulspending that bloats our state’s budgets, and to tell the politicians who comebegging for new taxes: “Not One Penny More!”
Ivey then matched her words with actions. “I am acandidate who says what I mean, and I mean what I say. So when I tell you “NotOne Penny More!”, I’m ready to put it in writing. During my firstterm as State Treasurer, I originally signed the Americans for Tax Reform’s“Tax Protection Pledge.” This new version says that as Governor, I willoppose and veto any and all attempts to raise your taxes. Now, I proudlysign it once more.”
After signing the pledge, Ivey concluded by saying,“I believe that when you run for office as a conservative, then you shouldgovern as a conservative. I’ve got a track record of making government smallerwhile working more efficiently as State Treasurer. Now you have it inwriting that I’ll keep on doing it as Governor, too.”
